Arrest Made After Kitten Found Spray Painted and Abused

WPBN/WGTU — A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection to a cat which was found spray painted and abused in Charlevoix County.

Paul Wicker, of Boyne City, was arrested Thursday on a misdemeanor warrant for animal cruelty but also a felony warrant for witness intimidation.

Wicker is being accused of trapping the cat and spray painting it.

According to Charlevoix County Prosecutor Allen Telgenhof, Wicker allegedly yelled to a co-worker, “I want her dead” or “I’m going to kill her.” An affidavit signed by Sheriff Schneider, a witness in this case was allegedly threatened by Wicker the day after she spoke with police.

The male cat, Murphy, was found on Jefferson Street near North Street in Boyne City. The poor cat was coated in orange-red spray paint and his tail was broken in more than a few places. The injuries required Murphy’s tail to be removed. Murphy also had other various medical problems but he has been treated.

“This crime was solved by the media exposure that generated a magnitude of citizens’ response to this heinous crime,” said the Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office. “Several citizens came forward to provide the Sheriff’s Office with leads to solve the case which touched the hearts of many people.”
Wicker’s bond is $50,000.

Murphy had to be shaved to get the spray paint off of him but the vet says he is healthy and is expected to make a full recovery.
