Your Guide To Sharing Meals With Your Cat

You Can Share Your Food With Your Cat, Sometimes

Most of your kitty’s diet should be a nutritionally complete cat food, however you can give her the occasional table scrap. Obviously, you need to know how to choose feline-friendly snacks with nutrients she needs.

Meat
Cats are by nature meat eaters. They need to have the protein that’s in meat for a strong heart, good vision, and a healthy reproductive system. Cooked beef, chicken, turkey, and lean deli meats are a great way to give them that. Raw meat can potentially make your cat sick. If you wouldn’t eat the meat, don’t give it to your pet.

Whole Grains
Oats have a lot of protein per calorie, and they are extremely easy to make. Many cats like corn, and polenta, which has a good texture for them. You may try brown rice, barley, and wheat berries, but you may need to mash them up. Cats seem to like smaller grains like millet and couscous. Be sure to make sure any grains are cooked so your kitty can digest them fully. Whole wheat bread crumbs are fine, too.

Fish
Fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids. That helps your cat’s eyes stay sharp. Canned or cooked fish is fine for an occasional treat. NO SUSHI!

Eggs
Eggs are another super source of protein for your cat. But be sure they’re cooked. Like meat and fish, raw eggs can also harm your kitty.

Veggies
Only some cats like vegetables, and even fewer like fruits (felines can’t taste “sweet”). They are, however, a rich source of vitamins, and they’re loaded with fiber and water to help with your cat’s digestion. Try fresh cucumber or cantaloupe, steamed broccoli or asparagus, or perhaps some mashed potatoes. Although you might have better luck slipping him a veggie burger
and that, too is allowed!

Cheese
Cheese is a high-protein snack that’s fine for your cat in very small portions. however the protein in cheese is less “complete” than the protein in meat, fish, and eggs. We should mention also that many cats’ tummies can’t handle dairy, so go easy on the cheesy treats, and skip the saucer of milk completely.

Foods Cats Shouldn’t Eat
Avoid these foods when sharing your snacks. They’re toxic to cats:
– Chocolate
– Grapes and raisins
– Onions and garlic
– Macadamia nuts
– Bread dough
– Alcohol

Every Calorie Counts!
Kitty should only get “extras” occasionally. Your cat’s regular meals should be a high-quality cat food (look for an AAFCO statement on the label). If you give him people food, talk to your vet about what and how often you’re adding to his diet. Overfeeding your feline can lead to an overweight cat and health problems.
