Unaware the animals were in his car, Mark Simper, who lives in Melbourne discovered the tiny felines after he drove to work in Tullamarine, north-west of the CBD.
He had no idea until a friend of his heard the desperate sounds of meowing coming from somewhere hidden in the car.
‘He popped the bonnet, and lo and behold [in the engine compartment] there was one kitten stuck where the air-con is, while two were in the stain guard under the transmission,’ he said.
Mr Simper, an animal lover himself, removed the white kittens spotted with black and brown. He was worried and concerned for their well being and grateful he found them.
“We got the little one off the top first, the other two were quite easy. One went into the engine head first,” Mr Simper said.
It was only after removing a few pieces of the engine that they were able to reach the animals.
‘We had to pull the air cleaner out of [my colleague’s] car, and I had my hand jammed underneath, holding one [of the cats] as it was trying to dive underneath.”
All of the kittens were taken to the vet. They were dehydrated but otherwise healthy.
Mr Simper was happy to find one of kitties a home with one of his colleagues, but the other two kittens remain at the vet.
Mr Simper is frustrated with the local council after he reported seeing stray cats. The council ‘didn’t want to know anything about it.’
