Two “Hero” Cats Save Woman in New York Fire in Bath

BATH, NEW YORK - Bath fire officials are calling two pet cats heroes for alerting their sleeping owner to a fire which broke out in their home.

Units from the Bath Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to 12 Gratton Drive around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday for the odor of something burning.

Firefighters saw smoke coming out from the eaves and, when they went inside, also reported that the ceiling tiles in the hallway were smoldering, according to a news release.

Firefighters put out the flames quickly and were able to keep damage minimal.

The house is owned by a woman named Elizabeth Hopkins, who told officials she was sleeping at the time but was awakened by her two pet cats. The smoke alarm did not work because the smoke was being drafted up through the peak, fire officials said.

Hopkins did escape unharmed, and “her two hero cats were found later hiding in the home and were uninjured,” according to a press release.

Sometimes our cats save us more than once.
