The Navghar police registered the case under section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle etc) of the IPC against unknown persons. Residents of Saraswati Nagar were shocked to find the dead animals and birds in the open ground where garbage are usually dumped by locals. Police suspect that the poison may have been meant for the stray dogs but the cats and crows also ended up eating it.
The police arrived on the scene with a veterinary doctor. The autopsies were carried out and the viscera and blood samples were send to the Kalina forensic laboratory for careful examination.
Police said that the growing number of dogs in the locality may have prompted someone to leave behind poison where strays visit for food.
