TUCSON, ARIZONA – Someone dumped a cage full of cats at a local animal shelter.
It was the first abandonment Karina Levine has ever seen since she started working at Hermitage about 3 months ago.
“Cases like this, of course, we’re not going to reject them or anything like that,” she said. “We’re going to take them in and give them care. Unfortunately, our shelter, we don’t always have a lot of room.”
Signs at the gate warn people that abandoning animals is a felony in Arizona.
Most of the animals are ill with diseases which including feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia virus, which have no cure.
“Their immune systems are a little more compromised than regular cats,” Levine said. “But they can live long, healthy lives.”
Thee new additions are not ready for their forever homes, but the shelter does have plenty of others available.
Hermitage is now accepting donations for the additional veterinary expenses.
