State Park Cat and Deer Shot and Killed! Reward Being Offered for Information!

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA — Investigators are currently looking for the person who shot a deer and cat at Fort McAllister State Historic Park over the weekend.

The park’s cat “Geechee” was shot sometime early on Sunday morning and died later in the day. The cat was named after the Ogeechee River which runs along the perimeter of the park.

Frequent visitors and employees at the state park remember the friendly cat well, and now they want to know who could be so cruel.

Park Interpreter Trevor Johnston explained Geechee hung out around the office, greeting employees and visitors.

“She was a real peaceful cat,” stated Johnston. “She never harmed anyone. She was also a real friendly cat too. Every day coming into work she would greet us, come up to our cars and say hello.”

Johnston says Geechee was so much more than just a pet.

“It’s a lot like losing a coworker or a park ranger. It’s really affected a lot of us pretty bad,” stated Johnston, “it feels like we lost one of our own team.”

While park officials try to track down the person or persons responsible, they also wonder why someone would be so malicious and gun down two innocent animals.

Johnston claims it won’t be long before another stray cat, like Geechee, comes along and sticks around.

“It’s almost like we can expect another one to take right up where Geechee left,” stated Johnston, “but as you say with any pet there is no one who can replace your last one so cherish the memories and think of her as we last saw her before she was injured.”

The Department of Natural Resources’ Law Enforcement Division is investigating the case. We’re told the person responsible may face multiple charges. Park officials tell us the suspect may even live in the nearby area.

Right now there’s a $550 reward for anyone who may have information that would help investigators make an arrest.
