At a mere five-years-old, Shon Griffin is the hero stray cats of Philidelphia needs. You read that right he’s just five-years-old.
Shon’s aunts, Kris Papiernik and Kia Griffin have spent literally years fostering cats and working with local rescues. For the last two of those years, the duo has been attempting to get a feral cat named Bug to trust them, so that they could get him neutered and vaccinated. All attempts were unsuccessful … until the Shon “Catman” Griffin one day showed up!
“[The cats] took to him right away. Bug came right over to Shon, rubbed against his legs, and allowed him to pet him,” Griffin explained to ABC News. Bug has since been neutered and vaccinated and is one of the nicest cats in the neighborhood!
Since his initial success with Bug, Shon has helped his aunts care for 45 feral cats in four different spots in Philidelphia, filling up their food bowls with dry food and also ensuring they have clean drinking water. Just like with any caped crusader fighting an excellent fight, Shon usually dons a superhero costume when on his cat missions.
“He truly loves them, and they love him back just as much,” Griffin stated to ABC News. It’s actually quite amazing that at only five-years-old, Shon is so committed to a cause. With little kids like Shon in the world, the future is looking bright!
Studies have found that the earlier a child can begin volunteering, the better. And volunteering with animals can actually make the impact even stronger.
Animal shelters all across the world are so desperate for help as they are often taking care of the thousands of homeless animals and need extra hands. You, too, can call your local animal shelter and ask about kid-friendly volunteer activities they may offer.
If they don’t already have some kind of program set up, don’t fret! There are literally tons of ways to become an active animal volunteer with children of all ages!
