Meet Derrick – a curious kitty who doesn’t have any ears at all.
BERLIN, GERMANY – The abandoned cat continues to wait for a new home at an animal shelter in Berlin, Germany, but unfortunately so far, there have not been any offers.
Derrick, who is approximately ten years old, was weak and undernourished when he arrived at the centre back in September 2015, with the tomcat suffering from painful growths in his ear.
Vets at the shelter took the drastic action by removing Derrick’s ear canals and ears due to the major pain he was suffering from as a result of the cauliflower-like growths, which could have put his eyes and nose at risk.
Almost-deaf Derrick has been described as a complete loner by staff at the animal shelter where he roams the corridors after being shunned by other cats because of his missing ears.
“With the dogs he has no problem,” said shelter nurse Franka Muller to NWZonline. She went on to say “the other cats do not understand him” and are unsettled as they cannot communicate with him.
It usually takes on average three months for a cat to be adopted at the centre but there have so far been no offers at all of a new home for poor Derrick.
Despite being ignored by other cats at the centre, Derrick does have a strong bond with the staff-members who have helped nurse him back to full health over time.
“Early in the morning he sits down on a chair next to me on the coffee table,” said Muller [translated]. “He knows that he is special.”
