Maine Man Sentenced to 48 Hours for “Mercy Killing” of Injured Cat!

WARREN, MAINE — A Warren man was sentenced on Wednesday to 48 hours in jail for slitting the throat of his injured cat with a dull knife.

Terrence E. Winslow, who is 62, pleaded guilty in Knox County Unified Court to one count of animal cruelty.

The incident occurred at his home back in June of 2015, according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s department reported last year that the cat had been struck by a car and suffered a leg injury that was not life-threatening. Winslow called a veterinarian, who explained someone would come pick up the cat and treat it.

Winslow then left his home and, when he returned later that same day, found the cat had not yet been picked up at al by the veterinarian. At that point, Winslow took a dull knife and cut the cat’s throat in an attempt to euthanize the animal, police stated. The veterinarian did arrive later, however, and did take the cat, which was still alive but later died from the knife wound.

Justice William Stokes agreed to let Winslow begin serving his sentence on July 1.
