PORTAGE, INDIANA. — Firefighters rescued two kittens straight from a sewer in Portage, Ind., over the weekend.
An employee at the Portage Car Wash heard kittens crying in the drain pipe and contacted Michelle Duca, founder of Kibble Kitchen Pet Pantry. The pet pantry, fire officials and Portage Animal Control and Care flushed the kittens from the pipe with a few light sprays of water.
The first attempt brought out only one of the kittens, but crews had to return a second time to rescue the second one. Duca said they’re calling the 6-week-old kittens Piper and Josh, after the two rescuers. They both went to the vet to be checked out and are said to be in good condition.
“Kittens are healthy other than a little thin and they have Giardia from the dirty water in the drain but will recover fully!” Duca said.
A third kitten that died in the sewer was buried, Duca said.
Piper and Josh are both expected to be up for adoption in a few weeks. Those interested in adoption can call (219) 947-4400 or visit thekibblekitchen.com.
