Animal Rescue Group in Chesapeake Saves The Lives of 24 Kittens

CURRITUCK, NC - An animal rescue group has saved two dozen kittens they took from Currituck Animal Services & Control.

They are hoping to find forever homes from all of them by getting them out of the shelter and in foster settings.
.
Volunteers at Chesapeake-based Cat Rescue Incorporated scooped the up kittens from the shelter on Wednesday.

By removing these kittens from the shelter this frees up of more space to allow for more animal adoptions.

Shawn and Lind Owen of Cat Rescue Incorporated told The Best Cat Page, “The last 5 kittens delivered tonight. In addition, we took in 16 kittens ranging from 4 weeks to 8 weeks and one six month old from the Eastern Shore Regional Animal Control Facility today. We normally don’t take in this many at one time, but all were in harm’s way/due to be put down within a week at these rural shelters.”

“I would like to say that senior high school student Hannah Svenson coordinated gathering fosters. She had previously led a TNR project. Once she heard about the plight of these cats she started spreading the word at school. She got a list of prospective fosters and how many cats they would foster. She met a rep from the shelter tonight to receive the last 5 kittens and get them to their foster. She also arranged to pick up a large kennel to house them.”

Shawn went on to say, “We have a process for all the cats/kittens received in our organization. My wife, Linda, weighs them and checks/treats for fleas/ear mites/worms, etc. When they’re reaching around 4 pounds, we set up appointments to have them fixed, receive rabies vaccinations and be combo blood tested for FIV/FeLV. After a week recovering they are available for adoption.”

“Our No Kill home based rescue conducts over 200 adoptions annually. These are accomplished by being a Petsmart partner. Our fosters go to the Chesapeake Greenbrier Petsmart most every Saturday and Sunday. We set up tables/kennels to show the cats/kittens being fostered in our homes. We also manage the Adoption Center with ten cages in petsmart. Of those 10 cages, 2 are dedicated to the Currituck pound. Our volunteers clean twice a day and we have folks on call to respond to adoption requests.”

Bravo! Now, this is how it’s done!
