Joshua Hiebert’s typical day in his Tampa garden took an unexpected turn last June when he discovered a tiny, orange kitten seeking refuge in the heat of the Florida sun.
The Discovery and Rescue
The forlorn kitten was nestled against the garage door, a small bundle of fur struggling in the soaring temperatures. With no mother in sight and the local feral cat colony a known presence in the neighborhood, Hiebert, moved by compassion, captured the moment on video to share with his husband, Jose Tortolero. They had previously shown kindness to the colony, perhaps prompting the mother cat to entrust her offspring to them.
Upon opening the garage, the kitten staggered inside, displaying signs of severe weakness and dehydration. Despite his frailty, the kitten’s spirit was soon to be revived. Hiebert and Tortolero’s nurturing care quickly became apparent when they introduced water to the kitten, who, in a moment of revelation, revealed his blindness through his cautious interaction with the water bowl.
Nurturing Whiskers Back to Health
Naming the kitten Whiskers, the couple’s immediate action was a trip to the pet store, followed by meticulous hand-feeding. Whiskers’ gratitude was palpable, manifesting in a burst of energy the following day. Veterinary care provided Whiskers with essential eye treatments, nurturing the hope that his vision might improve over time.
Now, six months into his new life, Whiskers has transformed into an exuberant, affectionate feline who has seamlessly integrated into the family, forming a special bond with his canine siblings. His gentle nature during playtime and the post-meal “zoomies” endear him even more to his loving fathers.
