DECATUR, ILLINOIS – After a video captured a female in the act of kicking a tiny kitten, 18-year-old Alexus Lowery was indeed arrested on a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals.
She is currently being held in jail on a $10,000 bond.
During his investigation, Macon County sheriff’s deputy Shane Beck “obtained a video showing someone kicking a small black and white kitten with such force” that it absolutely could have caused its death or serious injury, said a probable cause affidavit by Beck.
The video, which was posted on Facebook, indicated that Lowery was indeed “the person that kicked the kitten.”
As an indication of Lowery’s connection to the attack itself, she posted on Facebook: “I Kick Humans (rear end) Twoooo!”
When deputies contacted Lowery at a relative’s residence in Decatur, she was asked if she might have known why they were there.
“It’s about the cat thing,” Lowery reportedly responded to the deputies.
In the video, the kitten is kicked by the right foot of someone who was wearing a pair of bright orange or red shoes.
The deputies recovered a pair of bright orange shoes at the residence which clearly “appeared to be the same ones in the video.”
During an initial police interview Lowery “initially denied kicking the kitten,” but later said “she thought it was funny.” She states she saw the kitten walk away.
In order to explain her sick behavior, Lowery said that white people “view animals differently than black people.”
Beck claims that “Alexus did not appear remorseful as she was interviewed and continued to laugh that a kitten had been kicked and was severely injured or killed.”
Consequently, Lowery was arrested about 9:15 p.m. Thursday and booked into the Macon County Jail. She is due back in court Thursday for her arraignment.
