YUMA COUNTY, ARIZONA – A neighbor agreed to take care of a cat until its owners returned after it luckily escaped from a fire that destroyed a mobile home in the Foothills early Sunday morning.
According to spokesperson Charly McMurdie, at approximately 4 in the morning, the Rural/Metro Fire Department’s 911 Dispatch Center received a call from the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office reporting that smoke could be spotted coming from a mobile home in the 12600 block of Joleane Ave.
McMurdie stated when the first fire engine arrived on location it took complete command of the scene and upgraded the response to all other incoming units, reporting that the smoke was coming from underneath the mobile home.
While firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, the inside of the mobile home itself was completely destroyed. A vehicle that was parked in the driveway was also luckily saved.
Because the mobile home was skirted with bricks, McMurdie stated that the firefighters had to clear them away to get to the fire.
“Due to the type of skirting around the trailer, it made it more difficult to get the source of the fire,” McMurdie stated. “Firefighters had to use sledgehammers to clear the bricks away. They made three entry ways underneath the trailer and were able to get to the fire.”
There were no injuries, and the actual cause of the fire is still unknown.
The current residents were not home at the time of the blaze, however their cat was able to get out and a neighbor said that she would look after it until the homeowners returned.
