SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA – A cat in Sacramento is driving a serious wedge between neighbors.
Bunny has no idea of the dilemma she has consequently created with her curiosity, and now she is either stuck or hiding out in a neighbor’s hollowed-out oak tree.
Monica Montoya, Bunny’s owner, claims the cat has been in the tree for 10 days now.
“She comes out at night and she goes to the end, and she cries all night,” Montoya stated. “It’s gotten to the point where I’ve got to close my door because she’s crying too much, and I know she is starving to death.”
Sacramento Metro Fire has been to the location twice already to rescue the cat, but because the tree is hollowed out, there is a risk the fire department would have to cut the entire tree down, and the homeowner does not want that, said Battalion Chief Anthony Kastros.
“You can imagine being a homeowner, if your neighbor’s cat is under your house or something, or your chimney, and we want to break it apart to get to that cat,” Kastros stated. “It could be upsetting to that homeowner.”
Barbara Bowen-Doty, who is with Lap Cats Rescue, showed up Wednesday to help Montoya get the cat down.

But once they discovered the homeowner wasn’t at home, Bowen and Montoya decided to go over the back fence and try to do it all by themselves.
“I think if she’s not coming out on her own, it’s worth a shot. You can’t just let her die in there,” Bowen stated.
Montoya stated, “You would do it for you child. Well, that is my child and I will go over it and I’m sorry, no, I am not sorry I jumped the fence.”
Their attempt was completely unsuccessful.
Metro Fire has stated that it’s not ready to give up, yet.
“We’re going to regroup and hope to get some assistance from a specialist, either an arborist of an animal control specialist, or we may even bring a team out if we need to go to the next level,” Kastros concluded.
